Home Page Design Review

While trying to find some lesser known web sites, I just started typing in some different names of what I thought may be some actually names of companies that I wouldn’t really have any idea what they did.  The 1st I went to was mgcomputers.com.

From the first five seconds I would guess that they host web sites and you can register domain names.  That’s a really neat thing but the site contained zero contact information whatsoever.  So if I was looking for a web hosting service I would click back and try and search for another company.  There were no links for other pages or anything that I could decipher in the first five seconds.  I would change the layout of the site to at least add contact info and some more pages that would elaborate on what they are trying to do and how they plan on hosting my web site or registering my domain name.  The 2nd site I went to that I didn’t know was myinternetcompany.com.  Again I just typed in different urls until I got an actual web page.  This site was very very plain and had super small text that was pretty tough on the eyes to read.  I got the fact that they wanted you to subscribe to their company, but they di

dn’t really mention how they were going to help you get an internet company started, which on my list would be a priority if I was going to hand someone over my money.  They had fairly straight forward log-in links.  Overall, I didn’t think it would have passed my 1st five seconds test to gain my trust.  The next site that I knew of that I like is newegg.com.

I like the ease of the site that anything you wish to get to you can get to in just a click or two.  Yes there is a lot of information and links but it is fairly easy to navigate and I don’t like having to click a million different things to try and get to what I want to see.  The log-in info box is right there at the top right like most sites.  The search bar is right at the top of the screen and easy to see.  Another well made web site (at least that I like) is fark.com.  It also contains a lot of information to the user “above the fold”.  It is really easy to navigate to the type of news that you want to see or just search for specific news items that interest you.  Home page web design is all about user preferences really.  However, if you are designing a web page you should think about why the users are coming to your web site and providing them the most information in the easiest way for them to see it.  You should make the experience as easy as possible on them while giving them the information they want to get as well and giving them the information that you want them to get.  They should have such a good experience that they want to come back to visit again!
